WORKSHOP 1: TUESDAY JANUARY 10 - ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS
EXPRESSIVE PORTRAITS IN ACRYLIC

You should work from a photo reference with good light dark contrast and strong expression. A school photo would not work because it would be too plain. The idea will not be to get a perfect likeness but to get an emotional picture.

- canvas 12X16 or larger depending on your comfort level.
- Primary colours (red, blue and yellow) plus white, burnt sienna and yellow ochre.
- In the Golden paints Ariel uses phthalo blue, nickel azo yellow, and quinacridone magenta for her primaries but you choose whatever primaries you wish. If you want strong colour Ariel likes the addition of cadmium yellow, cadmium orange and cadmium red

WORKSHOP 2. WEDNESDAY JANUARY 11- ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS
FAUX ENCAUSTIC

Encaustic, or painting with molten wax, is an ancient art form which is again gaining in popularity today. Acrylic can duplicate the appearance of encaustic, a look that includes thick, slightly cloudy yet transparent layers with a subtle yellowish tint and a deep, luminescent sheen. If you like the effects achieved with encaustic you will enjoy the look of this type of acrylic paint. Subject matter will be up to you and you may choose to work either realistically or abstractly.

You will need:
-two surfaces, not too large unless you are working abstractly.

Special Paints for encaustic effect: (Golden products)
Please note:
Ariel will supply these paints for an extra materials fee of $25Bds

WORKSHOP 2. THURSDAY JANUARY 12 - ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS
THE MAGIC OF LIGHT MOLDING PASTE

Light Molding Paste is a Golden product. A relatively thin layer will create a surface that feels like a spongy piece of home-made paper. It has great absorbent quality, can be used with wash or watercolour painting method and offers textural interest.

Light Molding Paste can be used in many ways- we will be exploring three uses: imbedding of objects, complete cover and random cover.
Again, subject matter will be up to you. You should have three small (8X10 to a maximum of 12X16 ) canvases or boards to work on.
You will need your choice of colours and brushes and a metal palette knife

Source material
3 surfaces
Molding paste 8 oz or 16 oz, depending on how large you are working

WORKSHOP 4. FRIDAY JANUARY 13 - ARTSPLASH, HASTINGS
WATER MOVEMENT USING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES AND IRIDESCENT COLOURS

You will need several surfaces to work on depending on how fast you work but they should be about 16 X16
- photo source material of rolling waves featuring close up movement as well as longer views plus skies that are dramatic.
- your choice of colours and brushes
- applicator bottle with a variety of tips. You could also use a syringe (sold in drugstores)

Golden special products for this workshop
Please note:
Ariel will supply these paints for an extra materials fee of $25 Bds
- Clear tar gel
- Soft gloss gel
- A selection of interference and iridescent colours ...6-8
- Micaceous iron oxide

WORKSHOP 5. SATURDAY JANUARY 14 - COLLETON HOUSE, ST. PETER

Join Ariel at Colleton to paint on location in these magical surroundings filled with nature, history and art.
Ariel says: "There is nothing like plein air painting to awaken the senses. It can be uncomfortable and difficult, but you never forget the sounds, smells and feelings from where you were. Often the outside work is a study for a future painting or series of paintings. It forces you to make decisions faster than in the studio and gives a much fresher approach to any subject. I love to paint in the studio because I can plan and have my materials and comforts at hand. Outside I need to be flexible but some of my best paintings come from the outside experience. I have my pencils, paints and sketch book as well as my camera with me when I travel. I look back on these paintings and drawings with a flood of memories. The location is etched in my mind."

Colleton House was the former home of Australian oil and gas legend Frank Rickwood, In 1990, Rickwood bought the derelict historic plantation house and returned it to its former glory. Art was his part-time passion, and Colleton House became his live-in art museum. The house was built in 1647 by Sir John Colleton, an English royalist, who moved to Barbados after the execution of Charles I.
