"SHE", an exhibition of paintings and sculpture with Jason Hope, will open in the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Speightstown, Barbados on March 11, 2018.
What inspires me is to see and capture the emotion, beauty and mystery of women everywhere, and to experiment with materials and techniques. As women, we have much in common, more unites us than divides us. We are, as Kipling said, “ sisters under the skin”. We have similar needs and wants—not just for food, shelter and love—but also for a space of our own, to contemplate, to dream, to be transported out of our everyday reality. The new reality, like the old, is composed of bits and pieces, a collage of paint, paper or textile, that embellish, crowd or obscure.
I paint what I'm most familiar with: women. But underneath every portrait is a reflection of my own emotions and narrative, and articulates the essence of not only my subject but of a part of myself. This collection celebrates “SHE “.
