"SHE", an exhibition of paintings and sculpture with Jason Hope, at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Speightstown, Barbados March 11, - April 5, 2018.
What inspires me is to see and capture the beauty of women everywhere. We are, as Kipling said, “sisters under the skin”. We have similar needs and wants—not just for food, shelter and love—but also for a “room of our own”, to contemplate, to dream, to be transported out of our everyday reality. It is in this space that I paint “she”, particularly “she” of Barbados who has inspired me with her creativity, resilience, and strength.
As well I love to experiment with materials and techniques. In this exhibition I use collage, particularly textile collage—here magpie bits and pieces, each with their own history, combine to form a new narrative. In some of the paintings I use the ancient art of encaustic...painting with molten wax, where wax and fire combine to give a unique luster to the surface.
This collection celebrates “SHE “.
